Celebrating business history as a multidisciplinary field: prospects, comparisons and contributions
Join us in Portugal to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the European Business History Association, a scholarly organisation dedicated to the promotion of research and teaching on business through history.
The organisers of the 2024 Congress invite scholars to reflect on the nature of business history as a multidisciplinary field. The call for papers echoes the diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches currently animating business history.
We encourage contributions of various types: narrative or quantitative, data-driven or predominantly interpretative, practice-oriented or theoretical. Individual papers or panel discussions focusing on national, regional, or sectoral differences are particularly welcome, with no restrictions on historical periods, geographical areas, or thematic approaches.
The Congress venues bring together, in a unique symbiosis, an urban historical setting and a stunning view of the Tagus River estuary. The EBHA Anniversary Celebration is set to place at ISEG, located in the heart of Lisbon, in a venue with a rich heritage. The keynote lecture and the Congress sessions will be held at the new Nova SBE campus, a short distance from the centre of Lisbon and offering a breathtaking view over the sea.

Stephanie Decker is Deputy Dean and Professor of Strategy at Birmingham Business School. Her work focuses on historical approaches in Organisation Studies and Strategy, and she has published in journals such as Academy of Management Review, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Organization, Business History Review, and Business History.
As a historian working at a management school, most of her work is concerned with the connection between the social sciences and history, specifically organization studies and history. Her historical research focuses on business, entrepreneurs and the wider political economy on the African continent. She is joint editor-in-chief of Business History, on the editorial board of Organization Studies, Journal of International Business Studies and Accounting History, and Co-Vice Chair for Research & Publications at the British Academy of Management.

Since 2009, EBHA has awarded a price for the best paper on European business history, broadly understood, presented at its annual congress. The prize consists of a certificate and a cash prize of €250. The winner will be announced, and the prize presented, at the annual congress’ gala dinner. Those papers which want to be eligible must been uploaded by June 24, 2024. The term “European business history” is defined broadly, but it refers here to the topic of the paper, NOT to the author’s nationality or place of residence.

During the occasion of the 25th Annual Congress of the European Business History Association, the EBHA will award a prize for the best dissertation in business history submitted to a European university between January 30, 2022, and January 30, 2024. The prize consists of a certificate and a cash prize of €500. The dissertation can be written in English or another European language. The deadline for applying for the prize is February 19, 2024.

The collaboration between ISEG and Nova SBE in the organisation of the Congress is expressed in the use of both campuses to host the event, taking advantage of the different characteristics of the two locations. ISEG is located in the heart of a cosmopolitan capital with a rich heritage.
As for the new Nova SBE campus, it is located by the sea, not far from Lisbon’s city centre, benefiting from a privileged view. The combination of the two venues creates a unique symbiosis between a city centre steeped in history and a sweeping view over the sea.
The first day of the Congress will take place at the ISEG campus in the centre of Lisbon, and will be occupied with workshops and the EBHA Anniversary Celebration. The keynote address and the Congress sessions will take place at Nova SBE on the second and third days. Nova SBE’s campus is located in Carcavelos (Cascais), 16 km from the centre of Lisbon.
Both locations are conveniently connected to public transportation, particularly to a train linking both campuses in about 20 minutes. Some hotels are within walking distance of Nova SBE or ISEG, so participants can choose to stay in Carcavelos or Lisbon.

Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport) is well-served by international flights. The distance between the airport and the campuses is 24 km in the case of Carcavelos and 8 km in the case of ISEG.
Both campuses are easily accessible by public transportation.
From Humberto Delgado Airport: take the metro’s Red Line and change at Saldanha station to the Yellow Line (direction Rato). The trip takes around 30 minutes and costs €1.80.
From Rato’s metro station, you can walk to ISEG (a 15-minute walk) or take a bus (706: direction Cais Sodré; or 727: direction Restelo). If you take the bus, please get off at D. Carlos I stop (5th stop). It costs €2.10 if you buy the ticket on the bus, but you can save €0.30 if you use the metro card.
By Uber or Bolt services: approximately 20 minutes; between €10 and €20.
From Humberto Delgado Airport: take the metro’s Red Line and change at Alameda station to the Green Line (direction Cais Sodré). The trip takes about 30 minutes and costs €1.80.
In Cais Sodré, take the train to Cascais or Oeiras and get off at Oeiras or Carcavelos station (20 minutes; €2.10). Shuttle buses run from Carcavelos train station to Nova SBE.
You can also reach the Nova SBE campus on foot, which will take about 20 minutes from Carcavelos station or 15 minutes from Oeiras station.
By Uber or Bolt services: approximately 20 minutes; between €15 and €25.
ISEG is a 10-minute walk from Santos train station (650 m). Take the train to Cascais or Oeiras and get off at Oeiras or Carcavelos station (20 minutes; €1.95).
Shuttle buses run from Carcavelos train station to Nova SBE. You can also reach the Nova SBE campus on foot, which will take about 20 minutes from Carcavelos station or 15 minutes from Oeiras station.

All participants are strongly advised to book their rooms as early as possible, benefiting from the special rates offered to Congress attendees.
Given that Lisbon and Estoril/Cascais attract many tourists, they offer a wide range of hotels. Since the Congress is taking place during the high season, demand for accommodation will be high.
Participants are responsible for booking and paying for their accommodation with the hotels or the travel agency handling Congress registration. A few hotels are within walking distance of Nova SBE or ISEG.
The Nova SBE campus accommodation is conveniently located on the Nova SBE campus, 100 meters from the main entrance.
MILESTONE, an experienced provider of premium student accommodation, operates the facility. The price is €248 for three nights, from Thursday, July 11, 2024, to Sunday, July 14, 2024. The stay can be shorter, but the full price will be charged.
